Cali sat in her hotel room, staring at Chism’s number queued up on her cell phone. Her thumb glided over the green “send” button. She shouldn’t do it. Dallas was on his way over and would show up at any minute.

“I’m young, I’m single, I don’t owe anyone anything, and a group of murder clowns could kill me at any minute. Fuck it.”

Chism picked up after two rings. “Do you like Turkish?” he asked.

Cali laughed and shook her head. “You’re like a Magic 8-Ball. You know that, right?”

“Reply hazy, try again.”

“I think I’d rather date a Ouija board.”

“I’m certainly not going to tell you who you can and cannot date, but a Magic 8-Ball takes way less effort than an Ouija Board’s all-powerful Elder Gods from realms beyond the comprehension of our measly mortal minds.”

“Oh, Jesus, I’m dealing with a Cthulhu nerd.”

“You caught the reference, so you’re just as nerdy as I am. Nerd.”

There was a difference between knowing a topic and liking a topic. Her father wanted to make sure she was well-read. Not just the common literary classics, but also popular science fiction, fantasy, and horror. She knew the spice must flow, that hobbits sat around getting stoned all day, and never read from the Necronomicon. Alas, she didn’t revel in those stories, but now wasn’t the time to share that with Chism. “Yeah. I’m the nerd.”

“Do not make me turn to the timeless and infallible I’m-rubber-and-you’re-glue defense.”

“Okay, okay. I surrender, I surrender. The last time I went up against that defense was kindergarten. I lost to it then and I don’t believe I can defeat it now.”

“I don’t blame you. It was my exclusive argument in 1982, so, you know, I’ve mastered the shit out of it.”

Cali laughed again. She hated to admit it, even in the privacy of her own mind; her mother was right about it being too long since she felt this way. “So, I heard talk about Turkish.”

“Oh, yes, almost forgot about that since you nerded out about Cthulhu. You like Turkish food?”

“Not certain if I’ve ever had Turkish food.”

“I found a restaurant and wondered if you’d like to try it tomorrow night.”

A knock came at her door. “I have to go, but tomorrow sounds great. Text me the address.”

“Will do. Bye.”

Dallas was at the door. Looking good as always. Her conversation with Chism was amusing, but the only words of his she heard right now were, “I’m certainly not going to tell you who you can and cannot date.”

“Hey,” Dallas said, turning a single word into a lusty invitation. Intense eyes and a wicked smile helped.

“Hey, yourself. Come in.” She sauntered to the small table and sat on one of the two chairs. On the table was a chessboard, set up and ready for use.

Dallas sat across from Cali, studying the game board between them. “Interesting.”

“Do you play?”

“I dabble.”

His eyes darted from piece to piece, an entire game taking place in his head before the first pawn was moved. He smiled like a hungry wolf ready to eat his first meal of the day.
